The Building

The United States Institute of Peace—an independent, nonpartisan, national institution established by the U.S. Congress—has secured an extraordinary site in Washington, D.C. for its permanent headquarters. Located at the northwest corner of the National Mall, the headquarters will serve as a national center for advancing the study and practice of peacebuilding. The 150,000 square-foot, five-story building will house offices for Institute staff and fellows, a library and archive, a state-of-the-art conference center, classrooms, and a public education center designed to heighten understanding of the challenges of international conflict management and peacebuilding among students and the general public.

Architecture

Designed by renowned architects Moshe Safdie and Associates, the headquarters is a symbolic architectural statement of our nation's commitment to peace, visible along the capital skyline. The building will be environmentally-friendly and LEED® certified. It will have three distinct sections linked together by atriums covered by a series of wing-like roof elements constructed of steel frames and white translucent glass.

Location

Located at the northwest corner of the National Mall across from the Lincoln Memorial, the headquarters will occupy one of the most prominent plots of land in the United States and will serve as the primary symbol of the country's commitment to peace.

Facilities

The headquarters will be a five-story, 150,000 square-foot structure with two levels of underground parking. Its three interconnected core components—The Public Education Center, the conference center, and the working spaces for staff—will form a collegial environment supportive of the free exchange of ideas and innovative programming that are critical to the Institute's work.

Green Building

The headquarters project is registered under the Green Building Rating System for New Construction, version 2.1. It will be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified.
