PNSS User's Guide
This guide is intended for use by contributors of PNSS data as a reference
for implementing the PNSS in their state, tribal government, or U.S.
territory. It provides instructions on how to:
- structure a PNSS record, comprised of multiple data fields from the
prenatal and the postpartum visits, for an individual woman,
- code each data field on the record,
- assemble and maintain the PNSS/PedNSS code file that defines the
contributor’s geographic entities, such as clinics and local agencies,
that are referenced in the production of annual PNSS reports for these
entities,
- submit transaction (data) files, containing PNSS records for
multiple women, to CDC, and
- obtain copies of contributor master files, CDC’s cleaned and edited
versions of transaction files.
Basic Knowledge Needed to Use This Guide
This guide assumes that contributors have a basic understanding of the
PNSS. Contributors who are unfamiliar with the PedNSS are urged to review
the following sections on the CDC Pediatric and Pregnancy Nutrition
Surveillance Web site before proceeding to reference the PNSS User’s
Guide:
About PNSS: provides a
description of the rational and characteristics of the PNSS.
Health Indicators:
reviews the rationale and definition of the PedNSS health indicators, such
as low birthweight and overweight, derived from the PedNSS data submitted
by contributors.
Pregnancy Data Tables: provides
an overview of the annual national PNSS report, comprised of 23 data
tables, that present statistics on demographic distributions, prevalence of
health indicators, and related trends among women included in the national
PNSS dataset (annual PNSS reports for contributors present similar
statistics.)
Data Quality:
reviews data quality indicators, and how to interpret and use the PedNSS
Record Volume and Data Quality report to improve data integrity.
Glossary: provides definitions for terms used in the PedNSS and PNSS
modules and user’s guides.
