2008 Data Search and Capture Efforts for DOE Cases

Listed below are the data search and capture efforts for Department of Energy (DOE) sites that occurred during 2008. When available, we have included the sites for which information was recovered. The most recent efforts are at the top of the list:

  • Hanford
    Richland, WA
    November 2008

    Seventy-seven boxes of information were reviewed for the Hanford facility. Several documents were located and are undergoing review by Hanford's Declassification Officers. Radiation shipments, radiation monitoring monthly reports, operations monthly reports, radiation exposure data, irradiation of thorium, and incident investigations were found.

  • Brookhaven National Laboratory
    Upton, NY
    November 2008

    Whole body counting protocol, environmental and bioassay results, memos regarding thorium powder metallurgy, current and historical personnel monitoring procedures and supporting memos were retrieved for the Brookhaven National Laboratory. Seventy-seven boxes of information and materials located in various offices were reviewed and approximately 423 documents were retrieved.

  • Denver Federal Records Center
    Denver, CO
    November 2008

    This data capture was conducted to retrieve Los Alamos National Laboratory documents. One hundred and forty-five boxes of information were reviewed and approximately 330 documents were retrieved. The following information was retrieved: waste stream analysis, stack samples, environmental compliances, soil radioanalysis, nasal swipes, accident investigations, environmental surveillance, air samples, radioactive effluent release reports, lung counts, radiological incident reports, whole body count samples, raw alpha/beta/gamma analysis data, and in-growth ratios of Am/Pu.

    During this data capture effort, 10 boxes of information were reviewed and approximately 34 documents were retrieved for the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Radiation and contamination survey data (1958-1964), bioassay data, environmental water and soil sample data, fall-out measurements, Pu-Be and Ra-Be neutron sources, environmental data, and Health Physics notes were retrieved.

    Twenty-two boxes of information were reviewed and 288 documents were retrieved for the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Air count reports, exposure reports, surveys, investigation reports, incident reports, operating procedures, correspondence, work permits, and stack discharge reports were retrieved.

  • Brookhaven National Laboratory

    October 2008

    An inventory of Brookhaven's Safety and Environmental Protection Group records and indexed boxes and documents provided by the Occupational Medical Clinic were reviewed. Approximately 549 documents were retrieved. Information on whole body counting, urinalysis, bioassay records, exposure records, medical injury reports, and radiological investigations were retrieved.

    The following information on the Nevada Test Site was retrieved: general descriptions of Project Danny Boy (1962); Project Dribble (1960); Vela-Uniform (1961); Project Gnome; Project Hardtack (1961); Project Hobo (1960); Project Oxcart (1959); Ripple program (1960); Project Rulison (1969); Project Schooner (1963); Project Sedan (1963); Project Shade (1960); Project Dribble; Project Groundhog; Project Vela; Project Shade; Project Sterling (1966); Project Wagon (1961); and a consolidated list of underground nuclear blasts. Twenty-nine boxes of information were reviewed and 38 documents were retrieved.

    Twenty-eight boxes of information were reviewed and 10 documents were retrieved. Bioassay data, dosimetry monthly reports (1944-1960), 100-N routine and repetitive survey logs, and radiation survey sheets were retrieved.

    Documents relating to external exposure of the sites below were retrieved. The information was the result of dosimetry services provided to many sites for a period of time by the Brookhaven National Laboratory. Twenty-eight boxes of information were reviewed and 107 documents were retrieved.

    The trip was conducted to review and scan documents pertaining to the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). During this data capture effort, 38 boxes of information were reviewed and 182 documents were retrieved for LANL. The following information was retrieved: alpha and H3 surveys, ALARA triggers, stack exhaust reports, incoming radiological shipment information, HP technician logs, radiation worker training, operations safety requirements, radiation occurrence reports, radiation and contamination surveys, radiation incident reports, nose swipes, and external exposure information with some whole body counts.

    Several cabinet drawers of information were reviewed and 107 documents were retrieved. The following information was retrieved: interim and final decontamination reports from the immediate post war period and a brief summary of exposure data for the Metallurgical Laboratory; original construction proposal for site, army's assessment of the site, and aerial surveys with spectrographic data for the Weldon Spring Plant.

    Fifty-nine boxes of information were reviewed and 61 documents were retrieved for the General Electric Company (Ohio) such as: in-plant air samples, personnel exposure data, and high bay stack counting data, and visitor radiation exposure information.

  • Missouri Department of Natural Resources

    September 2008

    The following information was retrieved during this data capture effort: pre-design investigation work description, community relations plan, 2007 Environmental Report, pre-design investigation data summary reports, St. Louis site public meeting notes and transcript from 1998, subsurface evaluation summary report, radionuclide concentrations in crushed building debris, closure of Dawn Mining Company, and a history of the St. Louis uranium processing plant radioactive waste sites for the Mallinckrodt Chemical Co.; hazard assessment, emergency plan, survey information, and possible uncontrolled hazardous site information for the Kansas City Plant; closure report for soil sampling at frog pond drainage outlet, community relations compilation of material, environmental reports, feasibility study/environmental impact statement, radon emissions from disposal cell operations, and results of engineering soil sampling for the chemical plant and raffinate pit berms for the Weldon Spring Plant. Thirty linear feet of shelves and 59 boxes of information were reviewed and 136 documents were retrieved.

    Forty-five boxes of information were reviewed on the Hanford facility. Numerous documents were requested during this data capture trip and are in the process of going through classification review. The following information was retrieved: radiation monitoring, external dosimetry reports (1944-1965), Radiological Science Department records, N Reactor documentation, bioassay data (1949, 1951, 1952, 1954, 1958, 1960), and pencil and dosimetry information monthly reports (1944-1960).

  • University of Rochester
    Rochester, NY
    September 2008

    Six boxes of information and several file cabinets were reviewed and 140 documents were retrieved for the University of Rochester Atomic Energy Project facility. Dose record cards from 1980-1986, AEC and New York state licenses and applications, Medical School Annex incinerator records, and information regarding the American Electric Power's irradiation facility, including the 10,000 Ci cobalt irradiator were retrieved.

  • Brookhaven National Laboratory

    September 2008

    Inventory records from Brookhaven's Safety and Environmental Protection Group were reviewed and 186 documents were retrieved. The following information was retrieved: radiological control procedures, exposure reports (1980's and 1990's), radiological incidents, whole body counts (1987, 1993), neutron/proton information, glovebox surveys, environmental monitoring procedure, hot laundry review, x-ray exposure information, health physics/chemistry monthly progress reports, urinalysis data, neutron surveys, and data sheets.

  • Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute

    September 2008

    Fifteen linear feet of loose documents, 12 Boxes, and 4 file cabinet drawers were reviewed and 313 documents were retrieved related to the Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute. Personnel external exposure reports, whole body count data, bioassay data, health physics procedures, isotope information, health physics logbooks, air sample cards, area radiological surveys and associated floor plans, onsite radiological effluent monitoring, annual environmental reports, radiation work permits, and employee termination files were retrieved.

    Seven boxes of information were reviewed and 102 documents were retrieved for the Pinellas Plant such as: external dosimetry results, bioassay results, and summary reports of area final radiological status.

    Miamisburg, OH
    September 2008

    Radiological work permits, accident investigations, external radiation exposures, monthly stack flows, personnel dosimetry results, radiation dose assignment reports, Mound employee file badge data (1979-1980), and tritium urinalysis results were retrieved. Seventy-four boxes of information were reviewed and 178 documents were retrieved.

    During this data capture trip, 180 documents were reviewed and 21 documents were retrieved for the Linde Ceramics Plant. Documentation related to cleanup verification and a public meeting report of the proposed plan for Building 14 was retrieved.

    Rochester, NY
    August 2008

    Individual dose record cards for 1959-1979, annual dose summaries, material balance and accountability reports, surveys from the decontamination of the Med School Annex, material transfers, and licensing and contract information were retrieved for the University of Rochester Atomic Energy Project facility. Nineteen boxes and several file cabinets were reviewed and 207 documents were retrieved.

    Ninety-three boxes of information were reviewed and 146 documents were retrieved such as: bioassay results, gamma exposure rate surveys, controlled area access log for Associated Aircraft Tool and Manufacturing Co.; results of a preliminary radiological survey, guidelines for uranium residual radioactive material in soil, and certification docket for remedial action performed for B&T Metals; environmental samples for Colonie Site; soil analysis, closeout of radiation incident investigations, and bioassay results for Lake Ontario Ordnance Works; monitoring radon and environmental samples for Middlesex Sampling Plant; weekly reports, contracts, news articles, radiological data, characterization report, and monthly accountability report for Ventron Corp.; bioassay results, environmental samples and results, and elimination reports for Weldon Spring Plant.

    An inventory of Brookhaven's Safety and Environmental Protection Group records and various documents from various offices on site were reviewed. Sixty-seven documents were retrieved such as urine sample results (1952-1975), whole body count results (1970s to 1980s), monthly reports (health physics, industrial hygienist, environmental protection, building safety), radiation surveys, bonnersphere measurements/neutron calculations, 5480.11 implementation, RadCon manual implementation plans and reports of noncompliance, air monitoring, dose summaries, and effluent releases.

    Neutron survey data, air sample data, neutron measurements, fluroscope surveys, personnel meters monthly reports, radiation survey logsheets, thorium in urine, health physics monthly reports, thorium slugs, and inventory reports were retrieved. Seventeen boxes of information were reviewed and 298 documents were retrieved.

    August 2008

    During this data capture trip, 53 boxes were reviewed and 346 documents were retrieved. Operational and survey data, whole body counter and bioassay logbooks, monthly survey reports, employee film badge data, unusual occurrences logbook, and neutron reports were retrieved.

    August 2008

    An inventory of Mound Museum holdings and 1,700 documents were reviewed. Fifty-seven documents were retrieved. Documents were selected from an inventory of Mound Museum holdings. Documents selected include: P Building general support function documentation package, historic building survey, tritium waste control technology development program, health physics monthly reports, Mound publications, investigation of polonium in urine, and quarterly health physics reports.

    July 2008

    Health Physics and technical reports from the late 1940s and 1950s, summary instructions for handling Cotter concentrates, and papers describing polonium production including an analysis of radioactive impurities were retrieved for the Mound Plant during this data capture effort. Four boxes of information were reviewed and 34 documents were retrieved.

    Twenty-four boxes of information and approximately 600 documents were reviewed. Approximately 450 documents were retrieved on the Savannah River Site consisting primarily of technical reports and monthly progress reports from the Health Physics Group and the Works Technical Department.

    Kansas City, MO
    July 2008

    During this data capture effort, 102 boxes of information were reviewed and 146 documents were retrieved. Reports of analysis and bioassay sample routing logs, environmental monitoring reports, and soil and isotopic analysis were retrieved for the New Brunswick Laboratory; uranium guidelines, radiological survey results, and characterization results were retrieved for the Baker Brothers facility; site plan, low level waste storage disposal records, gamma-ray exposure rate surveys, and reports of analysis were retrieved for the Albany Research Center; and sampling data and an activity safety envelope for remedial action were retrieved for the Associated Aircraft Tool and Manufacturing Co.

    One hundred documents were retrieved for the Mound Plant during this data capture trip. Technical summary reports, technical documents for numerous isotopes (e.g., actinium, polonium, cerium), monthly reports, heat source and Radioisotopic Thermoelectric Generator status reports, plutonium oxide shipment papers, waste reports, and a listing of Mound publications were retrieved.

    Approximately 25 boxes of information were reviewed. Radiation survey cards with neutron measurements, tritium bioassay, special bioassay requests and results, unusual radionuclides, daily high urine results, urine bioassay, beta request sheets, and polonium bioassay information were retrieved for the Hanford facility.

    Twenty-three boxes of information were reviewed and 303 documents were retrieved during this data capture trip such as: shipments of billets to sites from the B&T Metals facility; progress reports from 1943 and 1945, badge results, air sampling results, and radium body burdens for the Linde Ceramics Plant; and film badge and air sample reports from 1945 and 1946, radon breath measurements, reports on medical conditions including times spent in railroad cars with ores, process descriptions, and material transfer information for the Middlesex Sampling Plant.

    Neutron surveys; T Plant records and incidents; radiation surveys for buildings 308, 324, and 69; air samples for 242-T; isolation reports for building 231; survey logs and forms for building 234-5; tritium bioassay results for buildings 108-B and 108-F were retrieved for the Hanford facility. Forty-four boxes of information were reviewed and several cubic feet of documents were retrieved that will need to be scanned and declassified.

    Thirty-six boxes of information were reviewed and 176 documents were retrieved. The following information was retrieved: documents describing some of the work being performed at the Connecticut Aircraft Nuclear Engine Laboratory (CANEL); correspondence regarding material transfers and a sampling of Atomic Nuclear Propulsion logbooks dating from 1955 for the General Electric (Evandale) facility; reports on transactions between the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Vitro Manufacturing (Canonsburg) facilities; job-specific external monitoring reports, radon analyses, radiological survey summaries, material transactions, and a brief history of the Middlesex Sampling Plant.

  • Pantex Plant

    Thirty boxes of information were reviewed to locate data for the Pantex Plant. One and a half boxes of documents were retrieved that will be examined in a more detailed manner to extract information. A broad range of site-specific documentation with respect to workplace exposures, policies, procedures, and monitoring results was retrieved. Substantial quantities of reported radiochemical analyses for Pantex Plant samples provided by Controls for Environmental Pollution were examined. Copies of typically incident related examinations by other laboratories such as Eberline and Los Alamos National Laboratory and numerous personnel dosimeter routine reports by vendors were requested. In addition, copies of historical radiation safety policies were obtained.

    Sixty-nine boxes were reviewed and 126 documents were retrieved during this data capture effort.
