Mass Spectrometry Group & Protein Microcharacterization Core Facility

The Mass Spectrometry Group and the Protein Microcharacterzation Core Facility share the following pieces of equipment.

Agilent XCT Ultra LC/ESI/Ion Trap/MS/MS

Agilent XCT Ultra LC/ESI/Ion Trap/MS/MS High duty cycle quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer capable of MSn with the Agilent ChipCube interface and on-line LC supplied by an Agilent 1100 nanoLC system. This mass spectrometer is used primarily for larger scale protein identification from complex peptide mixtures using the SpectrumMill data analysis software.

ABI 4700 Proteomics Analyzer (TOF/TOF)

ABI 4700 Proteomics Analyzer (TOF/TOF) High resolution MALDI-TOF/TOF that incorporates true MS/MS for protein identification based on peptide mapping and sequence tagging via CID. Capable of high throughput analysis of enzymatic protein digests.

Applied Biosystems Voyager DE STR

Applied Biosystems Voyager DE STR High resolution MALDI/TOF with linear and reflector modes. This instrument is used primarily in linear mode for the molecular weight determinations of intact proteins.

Waters/Micromass Q-TOF Premier

Waters/Micromass Q-TOF Premier Hybrid quadrupole-TOF MS and MSMS instrument with nanoESI and on-line LC using a Waters uPLC. Used primarily for complex peptide mixtures. This mass spectrometer has high mass accuracy (5 ppm) and resolution (12,000 in V-mode) for MS and MS-MS spectra. Additionally, this instrument has an extended mass range quadrupole, allowing for efficient transmission and precursor ion selection of up to m/z 8,000.

Micromass Q-TOF Ultima Global

Micromass Q-TOF Ultima Global Hybrid quadrupole-TOF MS and MS/MS instrument with nanoESI and on-line LC using an Agilent 1100 nanoLC. This mass spectrometer has relatively high mass accuracy (10 ppm) and resolution (10,000 in V-mode) for MS and MS-MS spectra. This instrument is used primarily for complex peptide mixtures and molecular weight determination of intact proteins.

Micromass Q-Tof Micro

Micromass Q-Tof Micro Bench top hybrid quadrupole-TOF MS and MS/MS instrument with nanoESI and on-line LC using an Agilent 1100 nanoLC; Advion Nanomate source also available. This mass spectrometer has relatively high mass accuracy (better than 20 ppm) and resolution (8,000 in V-mode) for MS and MS-MS spectra. This instrument is used primarily for complex peptide mixtures.

IonSpec Ultima FT-MS with 9.4 T magnet

IonSpec Ultima FT-MS with 9.4 T magnet Ultra high resolution electrospray and MALDI Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer with mass accuracy capabilities of better than 1 ppm and resolution of greater than 200,000. This instrument allows for the use of a variety of fragmentation mechanisms including electron capture dissociation and infra-red multiphoton dissociation as well as the more traditional collision induced dissociation. This instrument is used primarily for the characterization of homogeneous samples.

Thermoquest Trace GC/MS

Thermoquest Trace GC/MS GC/MS with positive and negative ionization, and an autosampler. It is primarily used for quantization.

Sciex 3000

Sciex 3000 Triple quadrupole LC/MS/MS with ESI, nanospray and PhotoSpray ionization sources. MS/MS capabilities include selected ion monitory, multiple ion monitoring and parent ion scans. It is used primarily for small molecule quantization.

MALDI Micro

MALDI Micro A benchtop MALDI mass spectrometer dedicated to open access applications. This bench top MALDI-TOF has high mass accuracy (10 ppm) and resolution (10,000) and is used primarily for intact protein molecular weight determination as well as protein identification using peptide mass fingerprinting.

Agilent 1100 Capillary HPLC

For capillary LC separations, electronic flow control to 10 nL/min. Diode array detector and fluorescence detector.

Hewlett-Packard 1100 HPLC

For off-line LC separations. Diode array detector and fluorescence detector.
