Procedure

Use this module every Council round to designate MERIT (R37) award extensions. Determine whether expiring R37s should be extended and, if so, the duration for those extensions, which can be up to five years.

Scientific Division CAAP Contacts

  • The Nominate MERIT Extensions option opens a Web page with a pull-down menu of R37 grants that are eligible for extension.
    • Select a grant from the pull-down menu to display its record, which includes the principal investigator, grant number, institution, percentile, priority score, and program class code.
    • Press the Edit button and select the "ME" code in the Nominate column.
    • Select the division that nominates the grant for extension in the Division column. Note that a division may not nominate a grant if its PI is a Council member representing the same division. In such a case, another division must make the nomination.
    • Select "Approve" or "Not Approve" in the Approval column.
    • Press the "Update" or "Cancel" button to finish nomination.
  • The View Active MERITs option generates a report of active R37 grants.
    • Select one or more divisions in the Selection screen.
    • Generate an Excel spreadsheet listing active R37 grants.
  • The View Current Selected MERIT Nominations option generates a report of R37 grants that have been nominated for extension.
    • Select fiscal year and division in the Selection screen.
    • Generate a report of MERIT nominees for the Council Book preceding the May Council meeting.
  • Discuss recommendations with the Institute director at the pre-Council meeting and present them to Council for its recommendations. The Institute makes the final award decisions.
