Support Services
What products
are available for my use?
The
Department of Transfusion Medicine is able to provide a variety
of products for the use of NIH investigators. These include whole
blood, buffy coats, plasma, serum, platelets, lymphocytes, monocytes
and granulocytes.
How do I
determine what to ask for?
It is up to each investigator to determine the product needed
for his (her) own research. If you are unsure of exactly which product
you need we will be happy to work with you by allowing you to try
several available products. To assist you better, we will also need
to know approximately what volume (whole blood, plasma, serum) or
total cell count will be needed.
Who are the
research donors from whom the products are collected?
Our
research donor pool consists of employees of the NIH, members of
the armed forces and community members. They are pre-screened for
transfusion transmitted viral diseases and other donor health related
conditions prior to the first donation which is distributed to the
research community.
How are the
donors reimbursed for their time?
Donors
are reimbursed for the time spent while donating research products
depending on the volume of blood processed. A voucher is made out
to the donor at the end of the donation period which the donor may
transfer into a check at the CC cashiers window in Building
10.
