Education and Training

The Department of Clinical Research Informatics (DCRI) offers of variety of educational and training programs for students, visitors, and NIH employees related to clinical informatics, scientific computing, and computer applications.

Students

DCRI provides opportunities for students to explore our research environment in clinical informatics and/or scientific computing through the following:

bulletsSummer Internship Program
Summer internships are available for undergraduate, graduate, and PhD level students with an interest in clinical (medical or nursing) informatics and scientific computing. Students will work in an environment that uses a multidisciplinary team approach to develop and implement complex systems. Students will engage in activities based on their knowledge and interests with an emphasis on the research methodology. Examples of past research projects include:

bulletsStudent Practicums
DCRI offers practical experience in clinical informatics, project management, system analysis, design, and implementation related to health care technology to meet degree requirements. Activities focus on meeting course objectives and other interests of the student. Contractual agreements can be arranged by contacting psengstack@cc.nih.gov

Visitors

Groups interested in learning about the Clinical Research Information System (CRIS) can schedule a tour of the Department of Clinical Research Informatics by contacting rdefensor@cc.nih.gov or smcdowney@cc.nih.gov .

NIH Employees

DCRI is committed to providing NIH employees quality training in a timely manner on how to use the Clinical Research Information System as part of their job requirements.

bulletsCRIS Classes Offered:

  • Introduction to CRIS - for all new employees except prescribers
  • Prescriber Course - for physicians and other prescribers such as Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Nurse Anesthetists, Dentists, etc.
  • Non-Prescriber Order Entry - for affiliate and ancillary staff who will enter orders as an agent for a prescriber in CRIS.
  • Clinical Documentation with Medication Charting - for nurses and other clinical staff who document patient care information and administer medications. This course is also offered without the Medication Charting module for those who do not administer medications.
