Abstract

With astronauts on the International Space Station being allotted only half a gallon of water per day and aerospace engineers setting their sights on a manned mission to Mars, scientists have developed innovative methods to turn waste liquids into potable water for use during space travel. These methods use processes such as catalytic oxidation and biological treatment reactors to produce the highly purified water required by astronautsí unique zero-gravity environment. Now scientists are looking at ways to adapt these technologies for use with specialized water systems on Earth.
