What We Do

The staff of the Department of Clinical Research Informatics (DCRI) is dedicated to the mission of the NIH Clinical Center. The DCRI staff is divided into multiple teams, which provide an array of services to support the technical architecture of  the Clinical Research Information System (CRIS) and its many clinical applications. In addition, DCRI staff support users from across the NIH who depend on CRIS to conduct research and patient care.

CIO Office
  • Project Management
    The Project Management Office provides a standard methodology for managing projects in the DCRI. The Project Management Office provides project management resources as well as education, consultation, mentoring, and tools to support project management best practices for all CRIS and DCRI Projects.
  • Program Support
    The mission of the Program Support team is to enhance productivity within the department by providing effective and timely administrative support to DCRI staff, leadership, and project teams.
  • Security and Privacy
    The Privacy and Security team's mission is to provide for security and privacy for all sensitive information by ensuring for the "Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability" for all clinical systems used within the NIH Clinical Center. The Clinical Center Privacy Officer is responsible for all Privacy Act matters, and the Clinical Center Information Systems Security Officer is responsible for computer systems security.
  • Scientific Computing
    The mission of the Scientific Computing Section is to support and promote the goals of DCRI by seeking and engaging in active research and collaborative work within the NIH community and with academia and industry. This work is intended to advance knowledge in the biomedical and computing sciences, and to produce results that lead to improved health for everyone.
Clinical Informatics and Operations
  • Clinical Informatics
    The Clinical Informatics section translates customer and organizational requirements into working components of CRIS. CRIS users see the work of this team through the development of patient information displays, orders, clinical documentation, reports, and order sets. The team also facilitates workflow analysis and process redesign for new projects and clinical needs involving CRIS. Thorough testing of all changes is a big component of every CRIS change and enhancement.
  • Clinical Systems Design and Infrastructure
    System Design focuses on the facilitation of clinical research workflow and seeks opportunities to improve clinical processes while enhancing system functionality.  This team also incorporates NIH, HHS, national data, decision support, and communication standards into system development to facilitate clinical care, system interoperability, and research.
  • Clinical Operations
    The Clinical Operations section translates information needs into clinical systems requirements, conducts functional and integrated testing of applications, develops and provides training, provides clinical support for CRIS, and evaluates performance and effectiveness of system use. As a CRIS user, you see the work performed by this team during training, requesting CRIS access, developing Protocol Order Sets, and answering all CRIS Support calls.
  • Clinical Requirements and Analysis
    The mission of the Clinical Requirements and Analysis team is to support the translation of clinical research information needs into system requirements and support the functional testing of clinical applications to facilitate congruency with organizational work, user access, and system design developments.
  • Education and Evaluation
    The mission of the Education and Evaluation team is to develop curriculum and facilitate training for internal and external training programs and fellowships, plan improvement strategies for clinical operations, and direct systems evaluation initiatives, including prototype testing, performance measurement, satisfaction surveys, and informatics research.
  • Systems Testing
    This section’s primary responsibility involves systems testing and configuration to support Clinical Center patient care and intramural research. Major testing duties include consulting with customers to define testing scope and objectives, developing testing scripts based on system and process requirements, and ensuring with testing the proper integration and function of all systems components.
  • Testing, Training, Security, Customer Support
    The mission of the Testing, Training, Security, Customer Support team is to support development & implementation of CRIS applications through integrated testing, delivery of instruction and facilitation of customer utilization of applications to support the workflow of clinical research studies and care.
Technical Applications and Operations
  • Asset Management
    The mission of the Asset Management team is to assure that computers, printers and communication devices are available and managed effectively to support DCRI and other Clinical Center departments, as well as research initiatives conducted at the Clinical Center.
  • Clinical Applications, Administration and Interfaces
    The Clinical Applications Administration/Interface team is comprised of staff that design and implement new clinical applications and interfaces, while maintaining existing clinical applications and interfaces, which include CRIS/SCM, LIS, EKG, as well as the interfaces between CRIS/SCM and LIS, EKG, RIS and Softmed.
  • Custom Applications and Databases
    The Custom Applications and Databases Team supports the database servers and develops custom applications for users. This team supports multiple departmental databases and applications, including procurement, design, development, implementation, and maintenance of the application.
  • Networking
    The Networking team operates in a very dynamic environment and provides comprehensive support to anticipate, meet, and exceed customer's requirements. The Networking team is responsible for DCRI network connectivity from the Clinical Center edge router interface right to the wall plate of each user within the Clinical Center.
  • Systems Administration and Data Center Manager
    The Server team enhances productivity at the Clinical Center by providing reliable access and prompt support of computer systems and their associated applications. Server team members maintain several hundred servers and other pieces of computer related equipment in the Clinical Center Datacenter. Services and systems supported include basic network services (such as email and file sharing), remote access, SunRay access, CITRIX, NUTRITION, PHARMACY, CRIS, and related ancillary systems.
  • Systems Monitoring
    The Systems Monitoring team ensures the consistent, reliable availability of critical computer and networking systems by monitoring all operational clinical systems. Team members provide 24/7 technical user support and communicate with users regarding any CRIS system interruptions.
  • User Support Team
    The User Support team provides customer focused IT services and technical support to users. Each Clinical Center Department has an assigned specialist to support department users. In addition, team members support the standard clinical desktop, the ITC, Patient PCs, the Duke Room as well as many other areas and projects.
