    The AADE is a multi-disciplinary professional membership organization dedicated to promoting the expertise of the diabetes educator, ensuring the delivery of quality diabetes self-management training to the patient and influencing and contributing to the future content and direction of the profession. AADE offers certification for Advanced Clinical Practitioners Specializing in Diabetes Management.

    National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators (NCBDE)

    The NCBDE credentials an individual as a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE).  The credential demonstrates that the certified health care professional possesses distinct and specialized knowledge, thereby promoting quality care for persons with diabetes.
     

  2. American Diabetes Association (ADA)

    To promote quality education for people with diabetes, the ADA endorses the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education Programs. To support this goal, the Education Recognition Program assesses whether applicants meet the National Standards. The Standards are designed to be flexible enough to be applicable in any health care setting, from physicians' offices and HMOs to clinics and hospitals.  The website provides a number of sample documents to help applicants meet the requirements including:

    • Mission statement
    • Behavior change goals and follow-up
    • Patient information form
    • Gestational education assessment and record
    • Physician prescription form

    Diabetes Physician Recognition Program

    To prevent the devastating complications of diabetes, NCQA encourages the provision of comprehensive, quality health care to people with diabetes. To support this goal, the Diabetes Physician Recognition Program, cosponsored by the American Diabetes Association, assesses physicians on their performance on measures of care for adults with diabetes and for children with diabetes.

    American Dietetic Association is the nation’s largest organization of food and nutrition professionals. ADA serves the public by promoting optimal nutrition, health and well-being. The American Dietetic Association's Nationwide Nutrition Network is a national referral service that links consumers, physicians, food manufacturers, distributors and restaurant owners and managers with dietetics professionals.

    AHRQ has a newsletter article on the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program - a patient self-management program that is widely used to help prevent of delay disability in patient with arthritis, heart disease, hypertension or diabetes.

    “What is Type 2 Diabetes?” Informational Video Series

    This video program from AHRQ and NDEP reviews the symptoms and risk factors associated with type 2 diabetes. This video highlights key components of diabetes management: nutrition, physical activity, medicines and monitoring of blood glucose. It also reviews diabetes complications and recommended screenings and checks for people with diabetes.

    The Bayer Institutehas multiple publications, videos and courses to help health care providers develop the communication skills they need to be effective.
     
  7. Diabetes Research and Training Centers' (DRTC) Prevention and Control Divisions

    Currently, six DRTCs are supported by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). The DRTCs carry out basic and clinical research and are located at the following major academic institutions:

    University of Chicago's DRTC Prevention and Control Division

    Indiana University's DRTC Prevention and Control Division

    University of Michigan's DRTC Prevention and Control Division

    Vanderbilt University's DRTC Prevention and Control Division

    Washington University's DRTC Prevention and Control Division

     

    Each DRTC includes a Prevention and Control Division that focuses on issues related to diabetes translation, including diabetes education, professional training, and community outreach. The researchers in the Prevention and Control Divisions develop and demonstrate innovative approaches to providing quality diabetes care. Several of the centers carry out programs onsite in model demonstration units, while others conduct their programs in community settings. 

    The Prevention and Control Divisions offer continuing education seminars, workshops in state-of-the-art diabetes management for professionals, an array of tested evaluation and assessment instruments, and professional expertise in developing and implementing diabetes programs in a variety of settings. Each center offers a range of educational materials, including videotapes, curricula, and program guides for health professionals.

    The Indian Health Service offeres an Integrated Diabetes Education
    Recognition Program and provides sample materials for developing quality
    diabetes education programs.

     
  9. Culturally & Linguistically Appropriate Patient Education Materials

    Some organizations have developed culturally and linguistically appropriate patient education materials that may contribute to effective diabetes care. Free materials for different ethnic minority groups are available.
