| Office of the Clinical Director - Welcome Letter to New Clinical Fellows
Welcome to the Division of Intramural Research Programs (DIRP), National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).
We are delighted to have you join our staff at the NIMH and certainly hope that you will find your experience here productive, gratifying, and enjoyable.
The Clinical Center and the DIRP NIMH have a unique place in biomedical research. You will find here an unusual array of clinical skills, scientific expertise, and biomedical technology, in an atmosphere particularly conducive to psychiatric research. We believe in fostering collaboration, both among our professional staff and between researchers and our research participants.
The Clinical Director’s Office is responsible for oversight of the clinical care provided to our
research subjects, for clinical research training, for allocation of clinical support staff, for the
formal protocol review process (including the protection of human subjects), for clinical quality
assurance programs, and for our relations with the Clinical Center. When clinical care problems
of any significance arise, I would appreciate hearing about them directly from you.
The DIRP NIMH is committed to the training and mentorship experience of medical staff fellows. Barry Kaplan, Ph.D. is the Director, Office of Fellowship Training which develops and administers a comprehensive training program for the approximately 200 M.D.’s and Ph.D.’s at the DIRP NIMH. For those of you who will be completing your fourth year of psychiatry residency training, Maryland Pao, M.D. is the Clinical Training Director and is responsible for ensuring that your fourth year of residency is in compliance with ACGME requirements. Please feel free to contact Dr. Kaplan (301–496–4183) or Dr. Pao (301–435–5770) with any training issues.
"Administrative" details will often appear burdensome. We will try to minimize the administrative load but are greatly appreciative of your cooperation in dealing with the routine administrative issues that do arise.
Please feel free to contact my staff or me whenever we can be of assistance. We are located in 6–5340 (SE). The telephone number to contact a staff member is 301-496-1338.
Maryland Pao , M.D.
