On February 15, 2007, Representative Lois Capps (D-CA), introduced H.R. 1078, the Comprehensive Cancer Care Improvement Act of 2007. The bill would amend the Medicare program to provide for coverage of comprehensive cancer care planning services to provide individuals diagnosed with cancer a plan that details all aspects of the care to be provided. Relevant to NIH, Section 401 would require the Director of NIH to establish a grant program for research on palliative care, symptom management, communication skills, and other end-of-life topics for such patients. H. R. 1078 is similar to S. 2790, introduced by Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA), on March 21, 2008. H..R. 1078 was jointly referred to the House Committees on Energy and Commerce and Ways and Means.
