The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases provides research education grants to seven U.S. institutions for the development, support, and national coordination of the STEP-UP High school and Undergraduate programs. The three institutions coordinating the High School Programs are: Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science, The University of Hawaii at Manoa, and the University of California, San Francisco. The four institutions coordinating the Undergraduate Programs are: Children’s Hospital, Los Angeles; Pennsylvania State University; the University of Maryland, Baltimore County; and Virginia Commonwealth University.

The STEP-UP Director at each institution is responsible for establishing the STEP-UP Program at his/her institution and directs, evaluates, and monitors the program to ensure that it effectively meets NIH standards and goals.  The STEP-UP Directors are active research scientists engaged in their own projects. They mentor students locally in their labs, assist in student placement off-site and interact regularly with the Program Participants, the Program Coordinators and the NIH staff to ensure a successful summer research experience for their STEP-UP students.

The STEP-UP Coordinator at each institution functions as the STEP-UP students’ advocate and serves as their primary contact for any administrative or programmatic needs during the summer research experience.  The Coordinator will provide direct oversight for all student activities.  After a student has been admitted into the STEP-UP summer program, they will be assigned a Program Coordinator.
