The RSC released several Policy Briefs over the recess, including this document on The Consequences of Repealing the Social Security Wage Cap.
Social Security
RSC Member Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), announced plans to introduce legislation that would use the Social Security surplus to start personal retirement accounts for younger workers.
RSC Chairman Mike Pence (R-IN) circulated this Wall Street Journal op-ed in support of the new approach to Social Security reform.
House conservatives gathered for a retreat in Baltimore last week and agreed on, among other things, a set of principles for Social Security reform. Read more about it in the following three news articles:
Social Security
52 House conservatives sent this letter to President Bush to oppose the idea of "add-on" accounts for Social Security, saying that such accounts fail to address the solvency and generational fairness problems facing the system.
Medicare and Social Security Trustees Report: the Medicare and Social Security Trustees released their annual report on the financial status of the Social Security and Medicare trust funds. The Medicare report shows the fund approaching a deficit and insolvency quickly, with a deficit in the Hospital Insurance Trust Fund by 2010 and bankruptcy in 2019, seven years earlier than last year's report predicted.
The RSC prepared a fact sheet on a Social Security loophole, known as the Government Pension Offset, which which in certain cases allows beneficiaries to collect from Social Security AND from a state or local government pension system. Click here to read the fact sheet.
