Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Are there Coast Miwok Indians that live locally?

  1. There are some native people living locally, but there is no reservation in Marin County. There are more native people in Sonoma County. The tribal office for the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria, Coast Miwok and Southern Pomo, is in Santa Rosa.

  1. How long has the Museum been here?

  1. In 1967 the Kiwanians moved our building to Miwok Park. What began as a respository for skeletal materials has evolved into an educational and cultural center and museum.

  1. How come you are the "best kept secret in Marin"?

  1. We are hoping that with the development of our website more people will learn about us. We want to get the word out about what a wonderful, though small, Museum we have here in Miwok Park.

  1. Are all Native People represented?

  1. Yes, we are the Marin Museum of the American Indian. Our school classes are focused primarily on the Coast Miwoks, but we seek to expand our education program. We have collaborated with Dominican University of California in San Rafael in offering lecture series on many topics concerning Native People.

  1. Do you have many volunteers?

  1. Yes and we are so grateful. Our volunteers help us immeasurably. There are always so many activities going on at the Museum that the volunteers can choose what interests them. We have people helping with exhibits, camps, office work, mailings, library, web page and more.

  1. Do you have a library?

  1. Yes, but it is a research library only, the books are not loaned out. We welcome all who want to learn more about native culture.
