National World War II Reunion "Tribute to a Generation" (Veterans History Project)

The National World War II Reunion is being produced by the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage in partnership with the American Battle Monuments Commission, and with the cooperation of multiple organizations, including the Veterans History Project.

This four-day event consists of a series of tented pavilions and stages, including:

  • Homecoming Stage & Capitol Canteen Stage - Sights and sounds of dance and music from WWII era.
  • Wartime Stories: Voices of a Generation - Narrative sessions and interviews on a variety of topics with WWII veterans and war workers.
  • Veterans History Project Pavilion - The Veterans History Project at the American Folklife Center in the Library of Congress will present interviews, speakers, and exhibits that showcase first-hand accounts collected from men and women, civilian and military, who served during the war. Information on how to write, record, audiotape, and preserve personal histories will also be provided.
  • Preserving Memories - Join experts from military and other museums and archives, who will advise veterans and their families on how best to preserve the documents and material culture of WWII. Please do not bring weapons, not even antiques!
  • Building the World War II Memorial - Architectural, engineering, landscape, and construction teams will discuss their roles in the creation of the National WWII Memorial. The City Museum of Washington will have an exhibition onsite.
  • Reunion Hall - A place to socialize, relax and reconnect with service colleagues.
  • Veteran Services - Personnel from federal agencies and organizations will have information on veterans’ resources and benefits.
  • Family Activities: Passing It On - Children of all ages are invited to engage in hands-on activities.
  • Military Equipment Display - Throughout the Reunion site will be displays of WWII military artifacts and equipment.

   Location: MCI Center, Washington, DC
   May 28: 2:00pm - 4:00pm
   May 29: 7:00pm - 9:00pm

Memorial Service

   Location: Washington National Cathedral, Washington, DC
   Time: 10:00am - 11:30am

WWII Memorial Dedication Ceremony

   Location: National Mall, Washington DC
   Times: 11:00am - Gates Open
               12:00pm - 2:00pm -- Pre-show Events (military band performances, video presentations)
                 2:00pm - 3:30pm -- Ceremony

Please note: Seats are limited at the dedication site but 20,000 additional seats on the National Mall (between 7th & 5th Streets) are available for viewing purposes (Metro Stop: Smithsonian). For more information see: http://www.wwiimemorial.com/
