Unable to fulfill his dream of attending West Point, New Yorker
Elmer Ellsworth went west, eventually settling in Illinois. Enthusiastic
for military pursuits, he secured command of a lackluster band
of voluntary military students and turned them into the U.S. Zouave
Cadets, a group that became famous for its precision drills. (Traditionally
Zouaves were particularly ferocious Algerian soldiers whose exotic
uniforms were widely imitated.)
