FOR STUDENTS
Internships
Congressman Fred Upton offers full-time and part-time
internships in both Michigan and Washington D.C to
eligible college students.
An internship with a Congressional
Office is both beneficial
and recommended for students wishing to pursue a career
in the political field or in Washington, D.C. after
graduation. Interns will gain a unique perspective
of the legislative
process, the workings of Capitol Hill and of our Nation’s
Capitol. They are expected to undertake daily administrative
tasks such as answering phones, answering constituent
inquiries, distributing faxes, sorting mail, assisting
with Capitol Tours and helping to maintain day-to-day
operations.
In addition to their main responsibilities,
the interns will have an opportunity to work with
the legislative
staff. Tasks include, but are not limited to, attending
hearings, data entry, drafting correspondence, and
researching bills.

Military Academy Nominations
Students wishing to be nominated to attend a Military
Academy can apply for the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard,
Merchant Marine and Naval Academies. Interested parties
should follow the timetable and information below on
the application process.
Timetable for Military Academy Nominations Procedure
- Early Spring to mid-October
Send and receive application
forms, including your academy choice(s) to the
St. Joseph District Office.
Make sure you subsequently contact the respective
academies, too. (Please do not hesitate to call
if you have any
questions).
- Official Date TBD – Always
the 4th Friday in October
Applications must be completed
and returned to the St. Joseph District Office. All
requested materials
must be received by 5:00pm on the aforementioned
date.
- November
Files will be reviewed and preparations
made for the individual candidate interviews. Notices
will
be mailed
to the candidate regarding the time/place of personal
interviews.
- Official Date TBD – Always
the 1st Saturday in December
Thirty minute personal
interview for each qualified candidate. THIS IS A
MUST – see
note below.
- Late December/Early January
Tally score sheets from
the interviews and notify the academies and nominees
of the choices.
After the academies are notified of the
Congressional Nominations, they will then
select the student they
determine to be the most “able” candidate.
The academy will notify Congressman Upton of the choice.
Within 48 hours the academy will then issue a letter
of appointment. (Congressman Upton will try to make
personal contact with the appointed candidate before
the formal letter is received.) We cannot determine
the time period for the academy to make its choice. NOTE: Personal interviews are conducted
on the first Saturday of December. However, the first
Saturday in
December is frequently a date available for ACT and
SAT testing. Arrange your testing for another date
as this is the ONLY date used for a personal interview.
This is MOST important – clear the first Saturday
of December on YOUR calendar.
Miscellaneous Information
Make arrangements for letters of recommendations as
soon as possible. This has frequently been a problem
as teachers are extremely busy with this type of request
when school opens in the fall. Do it SOON.
Contact each academy in which you have an interest
and request the paperwork necessary for application.
The Congressional Office does NOT do this for you.
Work closely with your school counselor and attend
any seminars that may be offered by an academy.
TYPE everything that is being sent to the Congressional
Office.
Make sure that your name appears on each and every
page.
Do NOT wait until the last day or two when turning
in all of the requested materials. Should something
be missing or incorrect, it will be too late to comply
with the deadline.
Mark your calendars for:
- 4th Friday in October – data
must be returned to the Congressional Office
- 1st Saturday in December – keep
date open for personal interview
Should you decide to withdraw your
name from any consideration for a nomination, PLEASE
let the office know so that
we can close your file and delete any future mailings. Please contact Congressman Upton’s
St. Joseph District Office should you have any questions.
