On April 28, Ms. Danielle Barcak of Catonsville
High School (pictured with Congressman Cummings on the right)
was announced as the winner of the 2007 Congressional Arts
Competition for the 7th Congressional District of Maryland. A
panel of judges consisting of various members of the fine arts
community made this selection.
Ms. Barcak’s untitled painting of a young lady on a sofa will be displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol Building, alongside artwork from other young people who won the Congressional Arts Competitions in their respective Congressional Districts.

At this annual competition, Congressman Cummings is delighted to
showcase the artistic talent of the young people in the 7th
Congressional District. This competition is a wonderful
opportunity for students to develop and express their creativity
through the arts.
More than 40 high school students in the 7th Congressional District entered the competition. Several young artists received awards from curators representing the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Contemporary Museum, the Eubie Blake Museum and Cultural Center, the Maryland Art Place, the Maryland Institute College of Art, the National Great Blacks and Wax Museum, the Peabody Institute, and Walters Art Museum.

Cummings greets noted morning radio host Tom Joyner (right), who
hosted his Tom Joyner Sky Show at Morgan State University on
Friday, March 30, 2007. Pictured on the left is Baltimore City
Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. The Tom Joyner Sky
Show is a live free concert that takes place in various cities
across the country. Called a "Party with a Purpose," the show
includes a voter registration drive and fundraising effort to
support Historical Black Colleges and Universities. Morgan State
University received $632,000 when it was chosen as an "HBCU
of the Month" by the Tom Joyner Foundation.

Howie Feaga at the annual Howard County Farm Bureau Legislative
Dinner in Lisbon, MD. At the March 23 event, Congressman
Cummings provided an update on agricultural issues that Congress
is examining.

Congressman Cummings discusses congressional
actions on Iraq at his town hall meeting on March 17, 2007. The
town hall was focused constituents' concerns about this war.
Following the Walter Reed hearing revealing
substandard care experienced by many wounded soldiers,
Congressman Cummings visited the Maryland Veteran's
Administration Medical Center in Baltimore on March 12. Overall,
Congressman Cummings was pleased with the care that was
available for patients. However, Congressman Cummings will
continue to push for increased resources for the nation's VA
hospitals in order to accommodate rising demand. Here, he is
pictured with his constituent from Dayton, MD, Army Specialist
Jason Ehrhart, 21, who is considered a polytrauma patient
(diagnosed with an injury to the brain in addition to other body
parts resulting in physical, cognitive, psychological, or
psychosocial impairments and functional disability). While
serving in Iraq, Spc. Ehrhart suffered a traumatic brain injury,
had his leg amputated and 60 percent of his body was burned. He
was in a coma for four months, but due to the care he is
receiving at the VA Medical Center and also at Humanim, a human
services organization in Columbia, MD, he is now able to
communicate and is physically recovering as well. Attending to
Jason are his parents, Mike and Pam Estes.
Congressman Cummings visits Ms. McColm's 2nd
grade class at Phelps Luck Elementary School in Columbia MD on
Read Across America Day on March 2, 2007. During the annual
visit, Congressman Cummings encouraged the children to make
reading a lifelong habit.
Congressman John Lewis (D-Georgia), Congressman
Cummings and Dr. Art Abramson attend the Elijah Cummings Youth
Program (ECYP) in Israel event at the Reginald Lewis Museum in
Baltimore, MD. ECYP is a two year leadership program for
students who live in or attend school in the 7th congressional
district of Maryland, which includes an all expense paid four
week trip to Israel.

Towson High School student Derreck Jackson who attended the
launching of the Powered By Me! campaign to educate Maryland
middle and high school students, parents, coaches and teachers
about the side effects, dangers and alternatives to anabolic
steroids and supplements. Following a series of congressional
hearings in 2005 focusing on the impact of steroid use on youth,
Congressman Cummings encouraged St. Joseph's Medical Center to
create a program such as Powered By Me! In addition to St.
Josepsh's Medical Center, other key community partners include
Orthopedic Associates, Towson Sports Medicine, Sheppard Pratt
Health System, the Center for Eating Disorders at Sheppard
Pratt, and St. Agnes HealthCare. The campaign and panel plan to
initiate surveys, conduct research, and encourage dialogue among
parents, coaches, medical professionals and educators as they
