More than half of current Hollins students participate in some kind of physical activity, ranging from recreational sports and instruction programs to intercollegiate play -- testimony to the quality and variety of Hollins' programs and facilities. Hollins is a strong competitor in seven intercollegiate sports and is known for the quality of its teaching and coaching. The riding team has previously won two national championships and traditionally fields one of the nation's strongest riding programs.

Hollins also offers fencing and softball as club sports for recreation and fun.

Lia Kelinsky "A great thing about Hollins is your opportunity to express so many sides of yourself. I’m premed and I’m really passionate about art, but I also get to play on the soccer team. I play defense, but I’m trying to work my way up to midfield."

The Blue Ridge Board of Officials has named its lifetime achievement award in honor of Professor Emerita of Physical Education Lanetta Ware. The Lanetta Ware Service Award goes to the individual who has demonstrated a lifetime of service to sports through umpiring.

Ware was an internationally rated lacrosse umpire, working for 28 years at the collegiate level, and is a recognized authority on field hockey, having officiated in a number of national and international field hockey competitions.

The 2008 recipient of the Lanetta Ware Service Award is Alice Dixon, a veteran official who has held many posts in the state over her 30+ years of service to the game as an official, assignor, and board chair.
