Genealogical Periodicals in LH&G : A Guide for ResearchThe major genealogical periodicals available in LH&G are described on the pages which follow. In addition to general bibliographic descriptions each periodical entry contains information on the dates of publication, other titles under which a periodical has appeared, whether it has its own cumulative index, and most importantly, which indexes provide the most extensive coverage. The indexes are noted in abbreviated form; see Key to Indexes (pp. 2-4) for full titles and bibliographic information. Bound volumes of the periodicals cited are available in the Local History and Genealogy Reading Room. Unbound issues should be requested in the Newspaper and Current Periodical Reading Room (LM133). Latest issues of a few genealogical periodicals are displayed in binders in LH&G. There are numerous periodicals not mentioned in this guide which contain genealogical information and which are cited in genealogical periodical indexes. Many of these periodicals are in the Library's collections and can be obtained in the same manner as other periodicals. An alphabetical list by title of many genealogical and U.S. local history periodicals is kept in a binder at the LH&G Reference Desk. Ask a reference librarian for assistance if a specific periodical is not found in this list or in the computer catalog. An uncataloged collection of family name newsletters is also available for examination in LH&G. Ask a reference librarian for information about this collection.
