Command Sgt. Maj. David M. Bruner was born in Evansville, Ind., and entered active service Dec. 30, 1978.

Prior to arriving at Training and Doctrine Command, Command Sgt. Maj. Bruner served as the command sergeant major of the Combined Arms Center, Fort Leavenworth, Kan.

Command Sgt. Maj. Bruner has held many leadership positions, including platoon sergeant, Special Forces engineer sergeant and team sergeant, first sergeant, senior enlisted adviser for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and commandant. Previous duty assignments include 101st Airborne Division, 82nd Airborne Division, 2nd Infantry Division, 5th Special Forces Group, Joint Staff, 3rd Special Forces Group and U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School. Command Sgt. Maj. Bruner has also served in numerous overseas deployments, including Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Kuwait, Afghanistan and Iraq.

Command Sgt. Maj. Bruner has earned many awards and distinctions throughout his career. These include a Legion of Merit; three Bronze Stars; a Purple Heart; Ranger and Special Forces Tabs; foreign jump wings from Qatar, Jordan, Egypt, Uzbekistan, Canada, Great Britain, New Zealand, Ireland and Kenya; the 8th Army Distinguished Leadership Award; and the SGM Larry L. Strickland Leadership Award.

Command Sgt. Maj. Bruner’s military education includes all levels of the Noncommissioned Officer Education System, Air Assault School, Rigger School, Sniper School, Airborne and Jumpmaster Schools, Battle Staff, Ranger School, Special Forces assessment and selection, and Special Forces Qualification Course.
