Civil Rights Voting Rights I believe that free and fair elections
are essential to our democracy. In addition to my legislation
on campaign funding, the Bipartisan
Campaign Finance Reform Act (BCRA), which President George
W. Bush signed into law in March 2003, I have supported election
reform legislation. In the 107th Congress, I supported the
Equal Protection of Voting Rights Act of 2001, which established
federal voting standards and provided needed resources to
states and localities to ensure that all Americans have fair
and equal access to polling places. I supported the final
version of this bill and I will continue to urge Congress
to monitor the implementation of this law to be certain that
the photo identification requirement will not hamper citizens
from casting their votes.
I also believe that full voting representation in Congress
for District of Columbia residents is long overdue. That is
why I am a strong supporter of the "No Taxation Without
Representation Act." I also believe that ex-felons who
have paid their debt to society should be allowed to reclaim
their right to vote and have supported legislation to do just
that.
