According to the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Office of Indian Education Programs (OIEP), approximately 50,000 (10%) of all Indian children are within the BIA and tribal school system. The remaining 90% are enrolled in public elementary and secondary schools. According to the OIEP website, there are 185 “Bureau-funded” schools of which 63 are operated by the BIA (including 33 day schools and 30 boarding schools) and 122 are tribally-controlled (including 84 day schools and 24 boarding schools. There are two Indian School districts in Idaho: Coeur d'Alene Tribal School (De Smet) and the Shoshone-Bannock School District No. 512 (Fort Hall).
Higher Education Opportunities
In Idaho, there are educational programs specifically designed to assist Native Americans in reaching their higher education goals. Lewis-Clark State College has services available to support their Native American students. Idaho State University has enrollment planning and support services available for Native Americans students. There are grants and federal funding available to assist Native Americans who desire to attend college.
