Between 1815 and the eve of World War I, some 17 million persons emigrated from Great Britain, approximately 80 percent of them to North America. This movement resulted from urban and rural discontent due to the industrial revolution, rapid population growth, natural disasters, and other factors. It was encouraged by travelers, intellectuals, humanitarians, businessmen, and common folk and by profit-motivated agents who attempted to direct the newcomers to specific areas. This study examines and critically appraises contemporary sources including "periodicals, diaries, letters, emigrant guide books, and travel accounts."
