The Electrical Safety and Communications program conducts laboratory and field research on mine power systems, electrical system maintenance, alternative energy sources and communications and tracking systems. Using state-of-the-art facilities, such as the Mine Electrical Laboratory, researchers perform a variety of full-scale in-house electrical tests as well as in-depth evaluations of new electrical safety technologies in the field. Researchers also provide technical assistance to MSHA, private industry and other NIOSH research divisions.
