About Armed Forces Sports:
Welcome
to the Department of Defense (DoD) Armed Forces Sports Web Site. The purpose
of this web site is to provide you information and results on our sports
program and championships, provide for the direct exchange of information
between the services sports professionals and our military athletes throughout
DoD, and be a portal page for potential military personnel to explore
the world of Armed Forces Sport.
The Armed
Forces Sports Programs includes 18 Armed Forces Championships, 7 National
Championships and 20 International Championships within Conseil International
du Sports Militaire (CISM). The program is open to all Active Duty
personnel, to include Reservists and National Guard on active
duty status. The objectives of the Armed Forces Sports Program are to:
- Promote goodwill among the Armed Services through sports.
- Promote the positive image of the Armed Services through sports.
- Provide the incentive and encourage physical fitness by promoting a highly competitive sports program.
- Provide the avenue for military athletes to participate in national and international competitions.
The Armed Forces Sports Program serves under the direction of the Armed Forces Sports Council (AFSC), an executive agent of the DoD. The council is responsible for the overall management and operation of Armed Forces, National and International sports activities. The AFSC consists of one representative from each of the five services, Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard.
The Armed forces Sports Office provides administrative and logistical support. The AFSC Chairman is rotated every two years among the four military services.
The Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense has overall policy guidance for the activities outlined in the Department of Defense Directive 1330.4. "Participation in Armed Forces, National, and International Sports Activities," March 9, 1987. To ensure that the United States Armed Forces Personnel are adequately represented in international and national sports competitions, members of the Armed Forces will be permitted to train for, attend, and participate in the Pan American Games, Olympic Games, CISM World Military Championships and other international competitions in amateur sports.
The scope and levels of the extensive sports program provided to the military community may vary within services due to funding restraints. This is primarily seen in the Varsity and Major Command levels of competition. The normal scope and levels are intramural, post level, service level (All-Navy or All Air Force), Armed Forces Championship, national, international, and Olympic level.
CISM,
which is headquartered in Belgium, is the second largest sporting organization
in the world with 122 military member nations to include the U.S. Its
motto of "Friendship Through Sport" establishes a common unity amongst
its members. Our military athletes compete against their counterparts
from other nations at venues around the world. CISM and National
championships are key preliminary competitions for our military athletes
who qualify to compete at the Pan American or Olympic games.
If you
are interested in competing in a particular sport your first step is to
contact your base or installation sports representative. You can contact
the Sports Representative for your branch of service by clicking on
the "contact AFS" link on the homepage.
We will update our information on a regular basis and do our best to keep it
interesting and informative.
