Planning Assistance to Federally Recognized Indian Tribes Program - Section 22
Location/Description
The U.S. Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, provides tribal planning assistance services to areas in Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin that are located within its jurisdictional boundaries. The Corps' Omaha District, Detroit and Rock Island districts service areas within these states that are outside St. Paul District's jurisdictional boundaries.
Status
The tribes have a need for future Section 22 work. Future work will depend on the availability of both federal and non-federal funds. The Bureau of Indian Affairs and the various tribes within the St. Paul District boundaries strongly support this program. However, funding constraints prevented the initiation of fiscal year 2005 work.
Authority
Section 22 of the Water Resources Development Act of 1974, as amended. This program provides planning assistance to states and Indian Tribes in preparation of plans to manage water and related land resources within their boundaries. Assistance is given within the limits of available appropriations, but $500,000 is the maximum federal funds available to any state or Indian Tribe annually. Non-federal cost sharing of this program is 50 percent.
Fiscal
In fiscal year 2005, no work was identified by the federally-recognized Indian Tribes.
