Dresbach Island Revegetation Project
Before the building of the locks and dams, Dresbach Island was approximately 262 acres in size and mainly covered with bottomland hardwood forest. After the building the locks ands and dams, approximately 49 acres remained above water. In 1940, following a period of intensive dredged material disposal, the island was about 136 acres in size. In 1994, the size of the island was about 120 acres (38 acres of forest along the outer edge, 10 acres of bare sand and 72 acres of sparsely vegetated sand).
|
Revegetation Objectives:
- Restore forest vegetation on island interior to more closely resemble pre-dam conditions for forest canopy cover
- Reduce habitat fragmentation on island and provide important forest canopy habitat for neotropical migratory songbirds as well as other wildlife
- Provide tree species, size and age class diversity within the floodplain forest
- Provide mast as food for waterfowl and other wildlife
- Manage to attain successional potential of local forest types
- Support ecosystem management goals
- Reduce soil erosion
- And improve island aesthetics
|
Project planning and coordination occurred in 1995. Turtle nesting habitat was discussed and an Environmental Assessment conducted. Preparation efforts included sediment, depth and cross section surveys to determine the amount of fine material needed. After the construction of containment cells, fine material was pumped from two bays along the main channel using a small hydraulic dredge. Approximately 15 acres were treated with 7,000 cubic yards of fine material.
In 1996, the district’s rivers and harbors section removed dikes from the containment cells and incorporated the fine materials into the sand. The Corps’ forestry crew planted 2,000 hardwood tree species, including bitternut hickory, black oak, bur oak and red oak. Tree shelters and weed mats were installed on about 16 percent of the seedlings. Planting site maintenance is being performed as needed.
|
A site visit was conducted in 2002, at which time vigorous trees, some bearing fruit, were noted.
