Encroachment Detection and Resolution

Photo of Volunteers

The Perry Lake Project office is committed to identifying, resolving and preventing encroachments on government land. The Corps is responsible for managing these lands to protect their integrity and to preserve their natural resource and public recreational values. These resources must be protected so that the project’s Congressionally authorized purposes of flood control, water supply, recreation, and wildlife management can be fulfilled. To accomplish these purposes, public lands must be protected from unauthorized private exclusive uses or encroachments, by adjacent land owners and project visitors. The project’s encroachment program is based on policies and procedures described in the “Encroachment Action Handbook”, available at the project office. Title 36 C.F.R, Section 327.14, prohibits alteration of public property, such as mowing grass or cutting trees. Project boundaries in the subdivision areas are monitored closely as these areas are highly prone to encroachments. The majority of the boundary outside of these areas is patrolled every three years.

Perry Project lands are marked by 163.7 miles of reservation boundary delineated with a yellow sign/post and monument at each angle point and point-on-line. Angle points were set in 1970 by the survey firm of Cook, Flatt and Strobel and other Corps contract surveyors set point-on-line monuments in the early 80’s. The project has thirty subdivisions adjacent to public lands.
