Sheyenne River Flood Control, West Fargo, North Dakota
Location/Description
|
West Fargo is located in southeastern North Dakota along the western edge of Fargo, N.D. The Sheyenne River flows through West Fargo and converges with the Maple River and then the Red River of the North a few miles downstream. The flood risk management project constructed at West Fargo was designed to provide Standard Project Flood protection and includes the following features:
|
• 6.8 miles of flood diversion channel
• 12.7 miles of levee
• A 57,000-gallon-per-minute pump station
• Two gated control structures
• Interior drainage facilities
• Two diversion weirs
• One new railroad bridge
• Four new highway bridges
• Roadway and utility relocations and alterations
|
Status
|
A construction contract was awarded in January 2008 to repair 6,000 lineal feet of failed slope sections along the diversion channel. In 2005, portions of the diversion channel were damaged by erosion/sloughing.
Construction of the West Fargo project was essentially completed in 1994. A second pump station was added to the project scope in 2002 and completed in October 2003.
