Painter Creek Habitat Restoration, Minnehaha Creek, Minnesota
Location/Description
|
The Painter Creek basin is located in the headwaters of Minnehaha Creek watershed in Hennepin County, Minnesota. The basin is in the western suburbs of the Minneapolis metropolitan area. Painter Creek drains into Lake Minnetonka, which discharges into Minnehaha Creek, which in turn flows into the Mississippi River near Lock and Dam 1.
Painter Creek was straightened and many of the adjacent wetlands were drained for agricultural uses in the early 1900s.
The focus of the study will be on the following objectives:
- Preserve and enhance the connective ecosystems corridors leading to Lake Minnetonka.
- Preserve, protect, and restore the natural habitat, appearance, and function of riparian/shoreline/wetland ecosystems throughout the basin.
- Improve the chemical and physical quality of surface water in the creek and subsequently in Jennings Bay (Lake Minnetonka).
See www.minnehahacreek.org for additional Information.
|
Background
|
In a letter dated February 18, 2004, the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District asked the Corps of Engineers to investigate the Painter Creek basin under the Section 206 authority. A project fact sheet indicating a Federal interest was completed in 2007.
|
Status
|
The feasibility study is underway and will be completed in 2008. The project is progressing on schedule, and significant coordination has been accomplished with numerous other agencies. The recommendations may include the addition of weirs to restore the natural hydrology, scrapings to expose the native seed bed, native plantings, and stream remeanders that would allow the stream to occupy its historic channel.
