Chippewa River at Big Bend , Minnesota - Stream Bank Protection
Location/Description
|
Big Bend cemetery is in Minnesota's Chippewa County on the south bank of the Chippewa River. The project is located approximately 15 miles north of Montevideo, Minn., and 150 miles west of Minneapolis.
Erosion from the Chippewa River was threatening a cemetery located on top of a 55-foot-high eroding bluff. At the site, 134 graves were immediately threatened.
The project protects approximately 900 linear feet of streambank with stone toe protection called riprap. Topsoil and seeding over the stone will help to establish vegetative protection on the eroded slope. Northwest Constructors of Mahnomen, Minn., placed nearly 8,600 tons of riprap and 1,700 tons of topsoil along the streambank.

Status
|
The project is being closed out. Construction was substantially completed in November 2006. Chippewa County requested a streambank protection study from the Corps of Engineers on June 19, 2001. The study began in January 2002. The project was approved for construction on May 24, 2004. Chippewa County and the Corps executed a project cooperation agreement on Sept. 29, 2005, and the construction contract was awarded on July 31, 2006.
