Additional Information
- Hawaii Center for Volcanology (HCV)
- HCV was conceived and created in 1992 as a cooperative effort involving over 80 scientists, mainly from SOEST (the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology) at UH Manoa, HVO (the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory) on the Big Island of Hawaii, and CSAV (the Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes) at UH Hilo and Manoa. At present, this WWW site is the only physical manifestation of HCV. It is maintained entirely by SOEST staff members. Excellent information pages are maintained for Loihi and Kilauea.
- Hawaii Scientific Drilling Project
- HSDP has drilled a 1056 m hole in Hilo, Hawaii, retrieving rocks from the Hawaiian volcanoes Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea. Complete lithologic core log and photographs of each box of core and of thin-sections of most units. Pointers to data at remote sites contributed by project investigators.
- Mauna Loa, Decade Volcano
- Lots of information about the largest volcano on Earth. Papers, maps, and links to other sites with Mauna Loa data or images. Provided by the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
- University of Hawaii - Hilo: Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes (CSAV)
- The Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes (CSAV) operates out of the University of Hawai'i at Hilo. The professional staff consist of faculty from the University of Hawai'i and scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. CSAV's mission is to provide training and information on volcanic and natural hazards that occur in Hawaii and worldwide. This is done through a variety of programs: public outreach, including visits to schools and the presentation of public lectures and symposia; a summer program training scientists from developing nations in techniques of volcanic hazards monitoring and response; a summer field camp training university students in volcanological field methods; a program training educators; and the production of public informational programs on natural hazards preparedness and response for Hawaii's residents.
- University of Hawaii - Manoa: School of Oceanography and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST)
- The Department of Geology & Geophysics includes a Research Division of Volcanology, Geochemistry, and Petrology, although other divisions are also involved in volcanology research. Their "Ask-an-Earth Scientist" feature allows questions from the general public about all aspects of earth scientists that are answered by a group of nine scientists. Some recent questions & answers are given -- quite a variety!
- Virtually Hawaii
- "Virtual" field trips are provided for all of the islands with space and aircraft. The Big Island Trips include many of Kilauea. Site stopped updating in September 1999. A joint effort by researchers at the University of Hawaii, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, and TerraSystems Inc., Hawaii.
- Volcano World: North America
- Images, basic information, and references. Not restricted to Holocene volcanoes. Includes Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii, and the West Indies.
- Volcanic Ash Advisory Statements
- Aviation notices issued by the Washington Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC). Coverage area includes the continental United States and Hawaii.
