Welcome to CSAV!

The Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes (CSAV) is located on the Big Island of Hawaii, and operates out of the University of Hawaii at Hilo. The Center is a training and outreach program founded by Robert W. Decker. CSAV's mission is to provide training and information on volcanic and natural hazards that occur in Hawaii and worldwide. CSAV has been operating since 1989, and is a cooperative program of the University of Hawaii at Hilo (UHH), the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO), and the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM).

Our cooperative research program enables us to work with and provide specialized support to the U.S. Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, and includes seismologic, geodetic, and geochemical monitoring and analysis. CSAV's International Training Course in Volcano Hazards Monitoring has provided training in the techniques of monitoring active volcanoes and forecasting volcanic eruptions to over 100 scientists from 23 nations. Our education program includes a three-week summer course entitled "Field Methods in Volcanology," and our outreach program—with an emphasis on visiting classes of schoolchildren, including Na Pua No'eau—covers natural hazards commonly encountered on Hawai‘i Island such as eruption hazards, earthquakes and tsunami. We also collaborate with UHH Computer Science Department classes on research projects.
