Lower St. Anthony Falls Rapids Restoration, Mississippi River, Minneapolis, Minn.
Location/Description
|
St. Anthony Falls is on the Mississippi River in the city of Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. Restoration plans include development of a formal whitewater rapids channel with a trail and park on the east bank of the Mississippi River, across from the Corps of Engineers’ Lower St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam. The facility would use the vertical drop created by the dam and include a new river channel approximately 2,000 feet long and 40 feet wide, with a vertical drop of 25 feet. The channel would flow parallel to the river main stem in a park setting. The facility would include a recreational whitewater course for kayaking, canoeing, and rafting as well as improved public access to the river and formal shore fishing opportunities.
This unique historic site is the birthplace of Minneapolis and the milling industry that made the city the flour milling capital of the world from the 1880s well into the 20th century. The project would re-create, in part, the whitewater river that existed long ago.

Using available Federal and non-Federal funding, the Corps will work with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and other project partners to redesign the project based on Department of Natural Resources concerns and changed site conditions. In August 2007, the I-35W bridge collapsed onto the project area. The new I-35W bridge is under construction with scheduled completion by December 2008.
A design agreement with the Department of Natural Resources was executed in February 2002 for planning and design of the Lower St. Anthony Falls rapids restoration project and associated improvements. The design would be substantially in accordance with the Department of Natural Resources’ report, “Feasibility Study for Mississippi Whitewater Park, Minneapolis, Minnesota,” June 30, 1999.
