WKTY-AM Study Area
The WKTY-AM study area is a 19.6 acre site located just south of La Crosse, Wis., along the Mississippi River. On June 27, 1998, a storm producing 90 to 120 MPH winds caused extensive damage to the site resulting in uprooted and sheared trees.
The Corps established the following management objectives for the site:

- Re-establish and maintain high quality forest stands;
- Support wildlife habitat goals for the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge;
- Utilize downed and damaged timber.

Damage surveys were conducted on fee title lands and areas with good salvage potential were identified. Sale boundaries were established and “Leave” trees were marked with help from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. After coordination with other agencies and cultural resource surveys, logging began in July of 1999. More than 137,000 board feet of eastern cottonwood, silver maple, green ash and black willow was salvaged from the site.
Site preparation was timed to provide exposed mineral soil conditions just prior to seed fall and to promote natural regeneration of various floodplain forest species. A contractor was hired to cut all downed logs and slash to less than 12’ in length. The Corps’ Rivers and Harbors Unit used a D-6 Cat and a brush rake to pile slash and scarify the soil.

Since the storm, the invasive species reed canarygrass has inhabited the site outcompeting native plant and tree species. The Corps, U.S. Geological Survey Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center and
the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse have joined efforts to conduct a research study at the site. The study will examine the effectiveness of the FECON® mower and combinations of the pre-emergent herbicides Oust® and Pendulum® to inhibit reed canarygrass and enhance forest regeneration. Several years of data collection will occur for three to five years and beyond.

Study Design
|
- Study area divided into 20 separate treatment plots
- Each plot is randomly assigned five points for data collection
- Four plots are designated as control and not treated
- 16 plots undergo soil scarification
- The following herbicide treatments are each applied to 4 of the 16 plots
- 1/2 oz. Oust®
- 1 oz. Oust®
- 1/2 oz. Oust®, 3 qt. Pendulum®
- 1 oz. Oust®, 3 qt. Pendulum®
- Deer exclosures are constructed at one sample point within each treatment plot

In the fall of 2006, a FECON® mower was used to scarify the soil and pile slash. Next the Lely Rotera® further loosened the soil in preparation of herbicide treatment. Herbicide treatments were applied prior to winter freeze-up. The study is ongoing and herbicide treatments will be applied during the fall dormant season and as needed throughout the growing season. Also, monthly growing season monitoring will occur through 2009 at which time the study will be re-assessed.
