Forest Management
Overview
|
Protection and proper use of our natural resources is a major concern of the Corps of Engineers. Within the Natural Resource Section of the Corps of Engineers is the Forest Management Program.
The main objectives of the Corps’ Forest Management Program are as follows.
|
- To perpetuate and improve the bottomland forest for wildlife habitat, recreation, aesthetics, timber supply, pest control, and watershed protection
- To protect threatened and endangered species and preserve unique and/or representative ecotypes
- To support the management goals and objectives of the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge and the Gores Wildlife Management Area
- To maintain a diversity of productive habitat for wildlife through the application of forest management techniques
|
Program Components
|
Forest Inventory: An intensive inventory of all Corps fee title land has been completed. This baseline information about forest conditions is used to develop and implement management prescriptions to meet multiple use goals.
Reforestation: Thousands of tree seedlings have been planted along many areas of the river to improve forest diversity and sustain the resource.
Timber Harvest: When consistent with other resource goals, timber sales are used as a management tool to improve and sustain the forest as habitat for wildlife.
Monitoring Forest Health: Personnel regularly monitor for forest insect or disease problems that could pose a serious threat to the health and vigor of the resource.
