Western Massachusetts Bay lies east of Boston and west of the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, from Gloucester in the north to the North River in the south. The sea floor survey was conducted on four cruises over a four-year period from the fall of 1994 to the fall of 1998 using a Simrad EM-1000 multibeam echo sounder.
