Lower Pool 4 Channel and Dredged Material Management Study
The Corps of Engineers has started a study of the lower Pool 4 reach of the Mississippi River. The purpose of the study is to look at
|
- reducing dredging
- making travel on the river safer
- long-term plans on managing dredged material
- enhancing fish & wildlife habitat
- enhancing recreation
|
The study will focus on the Mississippi River and lands near the river from the foot of Lake Pepin near Reads Landing, Minn., to Lock and Dam 4 in Alma, Wis. Since most of the major source of sand entering lower Pool 4 is from the Chippewa River the study will investigate ways to reduce the amount of this material.
The study began in the spring of 2001 and should be finished by the summer of 2005. A public meeting and workshops to identify the issues in the area and potential solutions were held in 2001.
A major issue is the identification of long-term dredged material placement sites for the study area. We look forward to working with state and federal agencies and local and national groups to find a plan that meets the needs of most everyone. The product of the study will be a Definite Project Report/Environmental Assessment that will contain a recommended plan and the steps needed to implement the plan.
