Mississippi River Locks and Dams Nos. 2-10 Embankment Rehabilitation
Location/Description
Earthfill embankments are integral to each of the Mississippi River Locks and Dams 2 through 10 sites. The purpose of this project is to reestablish and armor degraded embankments to prevent further erosion and potential failure during high water events. The existing rock protection is well past its intended design life and does not perform satisfactorily. Wave action from high water in spring 2001 caused widespread erosion, and $4.3 million was spent on repairing the damages.
Embankment rehabilitation will address restoring embankments to meet current design standards. Overtopping protection adjacent to concrete structures is the first priority for design and construction. No increase in the height of the embankments is planned.
Status
A pilot embankment rehabilitation project had a construction start in 2007 at Lock and Dam 4. The project consists of vegetated sand berms rather than riprap protection on the embankment. The intent of the project is to provide protection for the embankment while enhancing beneficial habitat. Construction on the embankment is planned to be completed in 2009 and is estimated to cost $1.2 million.
Design for riprap erosion protection on the embankments near structures started in fiscal year 2006 and is estimated to cost a total of $22.5 million for all sites. No funds are currently budgeted for completing this design work for all sites or for starting any construction.
