Corps of Engineers provides Lock and Dam 8 statistics for the 2008 navigation season

SAINT PAUL, MINN. – Exactly 4,529 vessels and 7,928,446 tons of cargo passed through Lock and Dam 8, located near Genoa, Wis., during the 2008 navigation season from March 27 –Nov. 29. The MV Adam B was the last tow to pass through on Nov. 29.
Of these vessels, 764 were commercial, 3,687 were recreational and 78 were of the other category, such as government watercraft. This number marks a decrease in vessels from 2007, where 6,098 vessels craft passed through Lock and Dam 8 – 1,139 of them commercial, 4,928 of them recreational and 31 other.
In 2007, the amount of commodities transported through Lock and Dam 8 was 11,077,630 tons.

Navigation statistics fluctuate from year to year, depending on the weather, the flows and the length of the navigation season.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers constructed Lock and Dam 8 in 1937 and maintains it to this day. The lock’s last major rehabilitation occurred from 1989-2004.
