Corps of Engineers provides Lock and Dam 4 statistics for the 2008 navigation seaso

SAINT PAUL, MINN. – Exactly 9,522 vessels and 5,314,060 tons of cargo passed through Lock and Dam 4 in Alma, Wis., during the 2008 navigation season from April 11-Nov. 25. The MV James Faris was the last tow to pass through Nov. 25.
Of these vessels, 549 were commercial, 8,902 were recreational and 71 were of the other category, such as government watercraft. This number marks a decrease in navigation traffic from 2007, where 11,497 craft passed through Lock and Dam 4 – 823 of them commercial, 10,622 of them recreational and 52 other.
In 2007, the amount of commodities transported through Lock and Dam 4 was 7, 842,780 tons.

Navigation statistics fluctuate from year to year, depending on the weather, the flows and the length of the navigation season.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, constructed Lock and Dam 4 in 1935 and maintains it to this day. The lock's last major rehabilitation occurred from 1988-1994.
