Operations

NNSA’s Emergency Response Operations program acts as the headquarters command and control, functioning as the coordinating focal point for all deployed assets during a nuclear or radiological incident.  It also acts as support to any national special security events, special events, the Department of Defense; the Department of State during operations outside the continental United States and local, state, or federal law enforcement.

The Operations Program coordinates the following missions:

  • Search/Surge – Detecting nuclear or radiological materials during a particular event
  • Render Safe – Disabling a potentially yield-producing nuclear device by gaining access and performing diagnostics and disablement operations. Also, safely disposing of the components and supports nuclear forensics
  • Consequence Management – Addressing the consequence of a nuclear or radiological incident, including a terrorist attack, on people and the environment.
