Commodity Processing

Processing
allows States and eligible recipient agencies such as school
districts to contract with commercial food processors to convert
bulk or raw USDA commodities into more convenient ready-to-use end
products. Most of the commodities processed through this program go
to schools participating in the National School Lunch Program.

Commodity
Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) |
CSFP works to improve the
health of low-income pregnant and breastfeeding women, other new mothers
up to one year postpartum, infants, children up to age six, and elderly
people at least 60 years of age by supplementing their diets with
nutritious USDA commodity foods. It provides food and administrative
funds to States to supplement the diets of these groups.

Produce Program
Through the Department of Defense Fresh Fruit
and Vegetable Program, the United States Department of Agriculture
(USDA) has been able to offer schools a wider variety of fresh
produce than would normally be available through USDA purchases.
States and schools are extremely pleased with the quality,
condition, and appearance of the products, and they are excited

FD Disaster
Assistance
FNS’s Food Distribution
Division has the primary responsibility of supplying food to
disaster relief organizations such as the Red Cross and the
Salvation Army for mass feeding or household distribution. Disaster
organizations request food and nutrition assistance through State
agencies that run USDA’s nutrition assistance programs. State
agencies notify USDA of the types and quantities of food that relief
organizations need for emergency feeding operations.

FDPIR is a Federal program
that provides commodity foods to low-income households,
including the elderly, living on Indian reservations, and to
Native American families residing in designated areas near

Nutrition Services Incentive Program (NSIP)
The Consolidated Appropriations Resolution, 2003, Public Law 108-7,
amended the Older Americans Act (OAA) to transfer the Nutrition Services
Incentive Program (NSIP) from the USDA to the Administration on Aging (AoA)
within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The NSIP is
intended to provide incentives to States and Tribes for the effective
delivery of nutritious meals to older adults. Eligible recipients may
receive grants of cash from the AoA and/or commodities from the USDA.

Schools and Child Nutrition (CN) Commodity Programs (Schools/CNPs)
The USDA's Schools/Child Nutrition Commodity Programs support American
agricultural producers by providing cash reimbursements for meals served
in schools, but also by providing nutritious, USDA-purchased food to the
following nutrition programs:

The Emergency Food
Assistance Program (TEFAP)
Under TEFAP, commodity
foods are made available by the U.S. Department of Agriculture
to States. States provide the food to local agencies that they
have selected, usually food banks, which in turn, distribute the
food to soup kitchens and food pantries that directly serve the
