If you or someone you know has been sexually assaulted, immediately call the SARC at

719-333-SARC (7272)
available 24/7/365

and follow the below guidelines for preserving evidence.


1. Do not bathe, shower or douche.
2. Do not change your clothes.
3. Do not brush your teeth or use mouthwash.
4. Do not use the bathroom, but if you must, save your voided urine for testing at the hospital.
5. Do not eat, drink or apply/take any type of medication.
6. Do not disturb or clean up the crime scene.
Reporting Process                  

This process begins with a call to the SARC @ 719-333-7272. Your reporting options will be explained and you will be assigned a Victim Advocate. Both the SARC and VA are trained first responders. They will link you up with other helping agencies to facilitate recovery and assist the victim through the medical, investigative and legal processes.

  Reporting Guidelines
  • Determine immediate needs (medical, safety, emotional).
  • Encourage victim to call the SARC immediately at 719-333-7272 (available 24/7/365).
  • Be calm, not angry judgmental or threatening; and listen.
  • Be aware of victim’s response to rape; common reactions include freezing, flighting and fleeing.
  • Do not leave them alone; tell others to go for help.
  • Do not pressure them for details/information (especially in the case of an alleged sexual assault, allow proper authorities to do so).
  • Do not disturb any possible evidence – if in doubt; don’t touch anything (especially in the case of an alleged sexual assault).
  • Do not anticipate victim’s response – everyone reacts differently to trauma.
  • Suicide comments – take what is being said seriously, DO NOT leave the person alone, if this is a life threatening emergency, have someone call 911.

    1. Q – Ask the question, are you considering harming yourself?
    2. P – Persuade victim to seek help.
    3. R – Make an immediate referral
  • Help maintain victim’s options.
  Facts About Assaults
  • Remember that the majority of sexual assaults are not reported and that it is the most under reported crime.
  • Women are more likely than men to report that a sexual assault has occurred.
  • Both men and women are likely to report a sexual assault if there’s physical evidence to corroborate the crime.
  • False reporting of sexual assault is the same rate as for other crimes: 2-4%.
  • As a co-worker or a friend, your role is to support–not to determine if a sexual assault occurred.
