New Federal Guidelines: Community Mitigation Strategies for Pandemic Influenza

VA staff should check Pandemicflu.gov (http://www.pandemicflu.gov*) where guidelines on Pandemic Mitigation are posted, and consider how VA facilities might use them in pandemic flu planning and response. The new guidelines will be incorporated into an update of the VA Pandemic Influenza Plan to be released later this year.

The VA Pandemic Influenza Plan describes how the Department of Veterans Affairs will protect employees and the veterans we serve, maintain continuity of operations, communicate with stakeholders, and support and coordinate with Federal, national, state, local, and tribal efforts. This document is being added to existing VA emergency plans to assist all parts of the Department with preparation, response, and recovery stages of an influenza pandemic. It is organized consistent with comprehensive emergency management practices and provides:

  • Overview with planning assumptions, background on the Department, scope of the threat of pandemic influenza (Section 1—Introduction)
  • Mitigation and preparedness strategies and actions (Section 2—Preparing for Pandemic Influenza)
  • Response strategies and actions (Section 3—Responding to Pandemic Influenza)
  • Recovery actions (Section 4—Recovering from Pandemic Influenza)
  • References and planning and educational documents (Section 5 and five groups of appendices)

Additional tools and educational materials will be developed as this plan is implemented. The VA Pandemic Influenza Plan was originally dated March 2006. The VA Plan will be updated in 2007. Like all other pandemic influenza plans, it is a work in progress and will change based on new scientific and clinical information, results of exercises and drills, Federal policies, and experience during a pandemic.
