Systems - Lake Discovery

Currently on the NRM Gateway, Lake Discovery is a strawman, designed to show the potential of a knowledge-based management system. It is modeled after the Army's Fort Excellence, which is part of the Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) program created by the Community, Family and Support Center.

Imagine the possibilities an integrated system that describes the functional components of an operating project. For example in the case of a Corps of Engineers Campground, we could present the

    • The regulations associated with operations of a facility,
    • The facility standards, including operating management plan considerations,
    • The maintenance requirements, including the forms required for pesticide application to considerations for mowing and grounds maintenance all in one place.

The potential benefit of a system like this is consistency for the general public, continuity from year to year, and a forum to allow new and seasonal hires to understand the complexity of requirements. What are the possibilities, imagine allowing universities the access to this location, course curriculum could change and students coming out of recreation programs would have a sense of job duties, responsibilities and new ways to improve on an age old theme. The development partnerships for site enhancement in the future are an option.

We are considering the following topics for potential application at this site:

    • Campgrounds
    • Marinas
    • Visitor Centers
    • Communications, maps and brochures
    • Interpretive programs

Subject matter experts have not been identified at this time, nor has enhancement funding for the Website been secured.

We welcome your comments to this location and ask that consider potential topics that would be suited for this type of system development. Topics and subject matter experts will be sought and presented to the Gateway committee for consideration. Support from the Recreation Leadership Advisory Team will be sought for proponents and potential funding.

Take a look at what the Fort Excellence program sets as a standard and just imagine what we could do! If you like or hate the concept, if you have recommendations or want to volunteer for consideration as a subject matter expert in an area, contact Kathleen Perales, Website principal investigator.
