Mill Creek Watershed
Description:
Mill Creek drains southeastern Davidson County and northwestern
Williamson County. It originates two miles south of Nolensville and
flows northward to its confluence with the Cumberland River in
Nashville. The Mill Creek watershed is 108 square miles, with 72 in
Davidson County and 36 in Williamson County. There are 1,000+ structures
in the Davidson County floodplain. Areas with high damage potential
include Blackman Road, Harding Mall, Space Park South, Thompson Lane and
Murfreesboro Road, and Massman Drive. A recurrence of the May 79 flood
of record would cause an estimated $93M in flood damages today.
Over 16 miles of Mill Creek (out of 20) are listed as impaired by the
state. Mill Creek is also the home to the federally endangered Nashville
Crayfish. Major water quality problems include the habitat alteration,
siltation, organic enrichment, low levels of dissolved oxygen and loss
of aquatic and terrestrial habitat. These problems worsen as development
increases.
Background:
Metro Nashville signed an agreement to cost share 50% of the feasibility
study in Apr 03. The study will address flooding and environmental
problems. Potential projects to address both flood damages and
ecosystems, such as floodway evacuation combined with greenways and
stream corridor re-vegetation will be evaluated. The best solutions will
be recommended for construction. We completed existing conditions,
hydrology and hydraulics models in FY05. In FY06, future without project
conditions were finalized and preliminary alternatives were screened.
Current Work:
Funding was included in the FY07 President’s budget under the General
Investigations program to continue the feasibility study. This summer we
will be developing designs for the intermediate alternatives including 5
structural alternatives (replacement of 2 greenway bridges, modifying
the Briley Parkway Bridge, and a high flow retention structure), and 5
nonstructural alternatives (Blackman Road, Wimpole Drive, Paragon Mills,
Whittemore Branch and Sorgham Branch) for flood damage reduction and 8
sites for ecosystem restoration.
