About These Index Codes
Index name, as found in the drop down list box on the Guided Keyword Search Page, is followed by the index code as used in the Command Keyword Index code list
List of Guided Keyword Index Codes
- Keyword Anywhere
- The default choice, searches for words or phrases anywhere in the catalog record.
- Title
- Searches for words or an exact phrase in all title fields, including serial and series titles, subjectds about titles, and titles in contents notes.
- Author/Narrator
- Searches for material by and about persons and corporate bodies in the fields describing personal and corporate authors/creators/narrators and names as subjects.
- Holding Agency
- Searches for words or codes in the holding agency field. Not exactly the same as limiting by location because there is one holding code for every agency in the International Union Catalog. To use this field to search for NLS books enter, NLS. To use this field to search for NLS books and books produced by network libraries enter "NLS Regional" and select "As a phrase". Forother holding codes consult the list of holding codes
- Format
- Searches for the media designation in the title field. The media designations include:
- braille
- electronic resources (Used so far only on a small number of catalog records for web sites)
- music (braille)
- sound recordings
- map (tactile)
- text (large print)
- To use these in the guided keyword search, you can ignore the brackets and shorten to one word,
e.g.,
sound
instead ofsound recording
. - Annotation
- Searches for words or phrases in the annotation.
- Subject Heading
- Searches for words or phrases only in subject headings (including subject subdivisions) and genre heading fields.
- Production Date
- Searches for the year of production
- Series
- Searches for words or phrases in series title fields.
- Content Descriptors
- Searches for words or phrases in a special note field specifying a target audience grade and other
characteristics of the work. Works cataloged by NLS (i.e., NLS and locally produced network
books) will contain the following phrases as appropriate:
- Caldecott Medal winner.
- Newbery Medal winner.
- Pulitzer Prize winner.
- Award winner.
- Bestseller.
- Contains descriptions of sex.
- Contains descriptions of violence.
- Contains strong language.
- For preschool-grade 2.
- For grades k-3.
- For grades 2-4.
- For grades 3-6.
- For grades 4-7.
- For grades 5-8
- For grades 6-9.
- For junior and senior high.
- For high school and adult.
- Female narrator.
- Male narrator.
- These phrases are not necessarily used in catalog records submitted by other agencies.
